Creative Writing for Beginners

60 minutes x 10 classes; Every Thursday 7-8pm. 
Minimum age 11, gade 5-10. 
 
In this course, students will gain an appreciation for the nuances of words and a respect for the power of words to convey a precise image or idea. Students will also learn to identify figurative language and use it in their own descriptive writing. They will work on short writing exercises and assignments throughout the course. The class intends - 
 
To identify various types of figurative language.
To respect figurative language for its ability to bring descriptions and scenes to life.
To use figurative language effectively in one’s own writing.
To avoid the pitfalls of creative writing (clichés, pet expressions, generic words).To practice audience awareness.
To learn to assess the quality of a piece of creative writing (their own and others’).
To develop a ‘writer’s insight’ to use in their own writing decisions.
To respect the written word and its nuances.Teacher 
 
Mrs Taniguchi
Mrs Taniguchi holds a Master of Arts in English degree from Carnegie Mellon University. She has taught ninth, 11th, and 12th grade English literature and composition from 2001. Private tutor for the English, reading, and essay sections of the ACT and SAT and Private tutor for college admissions essays. Private tutor for AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition. Awards: *Poetry published, Big Reads magazine, 2016. *National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Institute Grant, 2005. *Poetry published in magazine from 1999-2005.
